How Can I Lose A Stone In A Month – Rapid Weight Loss With Intermittent Fasting

By

Expert Author George Matthew Harris

Rapid Yet Sustained Weight Loss

  • 1 month, 1 stone, 1 concerted effort

Lets figure out what’s necessary to achieve this. If we assume 30 days for a month, then we need to lose about 5lbs every 10 days (about 2kg, or 15lb in 3o days, or 0.5lb/day, or over 3lbs per week).

I’m going to take an imaginary man and woman and put some figures down for them, showing you how to do it for yourself if you’re different from my examples.

If we assume that there are about 3500 calories in a pound of fat, then you need to create a deficit of at least 11500 calories each week, if you want to get those 3lbs off (3500 x 14lbs = 49000cals).

If we then break that down into each day, that’s a daily deficit of about 1600 calories.

Now, let’s find out how much energy it costs to stay living:

I’ll take 3 men and 3 women.

Male 1

  • 70kg -11st 0.3lb – 154.3lbs
  • Energy cals (range) 1,918 – 3,036

Male 2

  • 80kg – 12st 8.4lb – 176.4lbs
  • Energy cals (range) 2,038 – 3,226

Male 3

  • 90kg – 14st 2.4lb – 198.4lbs
  • Energy cals (range) 2,158 – 3,416

Female 1

  • 60kg – 9st 6.3lb – 132.3lbs
  • Energy cals (range) 1,598 – 2,531

Female 2

  • 70kg -11st 0.3lb – 154.3lbs
  • Energy cals (range) – 1,718 – 2,721

Female 3

  • 80kg – 12st 8.4lb – 176.4lbs
  • Energy cals (range) – 1,838 – 2,911

Notes: The ranges shown for daily calorie expenditure are dependant on activity level, from sedentary (think office worker that drives to work and takes no or very limited exercise) to highly active (someone who has an job that involves several hours of manual labour per day, or exercises for more than 90 mins at a high intensity/consistently high heart rate each day).

These imaginary figures are based upon someone being about 170cm tall, in their mid 30′s, and are used for illustration purposes only, the principles behind the practices here are valid, you just need to personalise the practices to your situation. These are estimations only and will vary person to person, to find out more accurately you need to get your own starting figures. You can do this using the calculators found at caloriesperhour.com. Use the BMR and RMR calcs for a rough starting point, then use the practices here to modify the figures based on real world results.

So you can see that for a woman of 60kg, who is only lightly active or sedentary, this would basically mean not eating at all, for about a month!

Who is this for? Thing is though, a 60kg woman doesn’t really need to lose 14lbs (about 6kg) or over 10% of her bodyweight, so we’re not really catering for this person. What we should be looking at is the higher end of the scale. That’s where big weight loss numbers are really practical.

If, for example you look at the 90kg man, even a sedentary individual could cut over 1000 cals from their daily intake, as long as they do it with the right foods. I’ll come on to that in a moment.

First, let’s take a brief look at the 3 factors that will make this massive calorie reduction possible.

  1. Intermittent Fasting
  2. Eating high protein, low fat, low carb.
  3. Doing only high intensity weights and very low intensity cardio.

Now let’s expand each of those so you can create your own plan.

1: Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent Fasting (the Leangains version) is a simple approach to feeding the body. You split the day into two phases, an eating phase and a non-eating phase. The eating phase lasts around 8 hours, therefore the fasting phase lasts about 16 hours. This doesn’t mean that you eat for the whole of the 8 hour block!

There are two key aspects to IF that make it work in your favour when it comes to massive weight loss.

1: Each day is split, physiologically, into two distinct phases, each of which help your fat loss goal. These two phases are an anabolic, or tissue building phase, and a fat burning, or energy breakdown phase.

2: Using IF makes it much easier to reduce your calories than traditional dieting.

I don’t need to go into more detail about the IF lifestyle, because you can read the two posts on my website (address at bottom, search the Intermittent Fasting Category for ‘Intermittent Fasting Results and Guide’ and ‘Training For Fat Loss’) that tell the full story, suffice to say, if you want to make your weight loss as painless and effective as possible, you should probably be doing some form of IF.

2: Eating High Protein, Low Fat, Low Carb

In his superb set of articles about designing a fat loss diet, Lyle MacDonald talks about setting things up from the ground, rather than the top. Say what? Well, what we’ve done here is start with a weight loss goal, that being the top or end point, and the worked backward to figure out what we need to do. In those articles Lyle takes a slightly different approach and figures out what you need physiologically, and then puts those figures into a diet, to see what comes out at the end. Here, we are going to use part of that approach (setting protein intake) to give you a starting point for figuring out your foods.

How much food do you need?

Or more specifically, how much protein should you be aiming for at each meal? Well, we can give two answers to that question, the answer that’s best is the one that makes you feel most reassured. The quick answer is ‘lots’. The more specific answer is worked out as follows; start with a level of about 1g/lb of bodyweight and divide over your two or three meals, and then adjust based on lean tissue and strength drops and hunger/satiety levels. So if you find your strength dropping, and your muscle leaving your body, you need to add more protein in, and if you find yourself getting hungry between meals or not satisfied at a meal, add more protein!

What Foods Can I Eat?

I’ve put together a list of foods that will work whilst eating for massive fat loss. You can download it from my website, via the link at the bottom. One thing that I consistently find is the total lack of hunger and feelings of deprivation when on this type of diet, and this shouldn’t be surprising given the huge range of foods on offer here. One thing you’ll notice is the total lack of liquid foods/meal replacement powders/protein drinks. This is deliberate; they don’t provide satiety and satisfaction, and they don’t offer much opportunity for long term diet adherence. As Martin Berkhan says, ‘don’t drink your calories’.

Why High Protein, Low Fat, Low Carb?

A couple of reasons; 1, you want to keep calories as low as possible, as easily as possible. 2, protein plus lots of bulky yet low carb density foods provides the easiest way to feel full, satisfied and happy when cutting calories.

3: Doing only high intensity weights and very low intensity cardio

Each of the three components in this weight loss plan are equally important, so you’d better find a way of including this part! Just ask yourself if it’s worth jeopardising the whole plan for the sake of missing some simple exercises?

Why start with a statement like that?

Because it’s too easy for many people to drop back into old ways of ‘exercising for weight loss’.

What you NEED to be doing is heavy weights, with low reps and using as big movements as possible. Remember, big weights are totally specific to each individual, and the actual number/weight is irrelevant, what’s important is that you lift to YOUR capacity and you learn how to fully lift at your capacity. For those of you that have hardly lifted weights before that means learning what a max effort lift feels like, AND expecting that max to go up quickly as you learn how to get more and more out of yourself.

The great thing about this program is that it really is simple. Take the following exercises and rotate them:

  1. Squat
  2. Dumbell press, bench press or bodyweight dips
  3. Dumbell or barbell shoulder press
  4. Lat pulldown, pullup, seated row or bent over barbell/dumbell row
  5. Deadlift.

Your rotation is simple: Do 3 weeks of 5set sof 4-6 reps (5×5 style routine) and then 3 weeks of 3 sets of 9-12 reps (3×10 style routine). Each time you hit the upper rep range you increase the weight. Only after 10-14 weeks do you need to rest (but if you’ve already been exercising consistently for more than 12 weeks, you need to take a week of total rest right now – unless you’re goal is within 12 weeks from the start of your program, in which case, you get your rest at the end of that!)

If you don’t know how to do these exercises, you can get instruction from a competent trainer (you can find if they’re any good by watching how they get you to move and focus on the exercises your learning, if they get you to do your exercises like those done in instruction videos you may be sure they know their stuff), or you can check out the copious amount of vids on YouTube and figure your own way.

How to Deal With Your Mind

By

Expert Author Coleen G Schnurr

The mind is a truly wonderful body part. It receives and generates data all day and night long. It controls processes and functions within the body automatically without conscious thought. It keeps the heart pumping and the lungs functioning. It stores information, retrieves information and continually mixes information around (often without mixing it up!) leading to creativity and solutions to problems.

All of these tasks are just some of the things the brain is capable of. If the brain were a corporation, it would take hundreds of people to do all of the things that just one brain is capable of. It is magnificent! With a control centre like the human brain, it is conceivable that the human race is capable of equal greatness, right? That would stand to reason, wouldn’t it? Perhaps this would be a true statement if the brain were fuelled perfectly and given only pure and true information. Unfortunately, we do not get perfect food and we do not get perfect information and the mind also almost seems to have a life of its own.

With a thought generated by a brain, many conveniences have been created. So many creations started with the wisp of a thought swirling around in someone’s brain. Thoughts pop seemingly randomly into our heads all day and night long. Brains are influenced by all the information received. Our thoughts are influenced by what we see – with our external eyes and with our mind’s eye, what we hear, what we feel both emotionally and physically also what we feel physically both internally and externally. There is a vast quantity of information coming in from a vast variety of sources and the brain has to make sense of it all and form rational, coherent thoughts and conclusions. Even before we are born the brain starts receiving information. It struggles to organize and make sense of it all.

Bombarded with information all day and night, every day, day after day after day. It’s a wonder that the brain keeps receiving information, keeps regulating all the unconscious and necessary bodily functions as well as it does. Even with failing nutrition and harmful substances imposed on it, it functions amazingly well, all day and night, every day, day after day after day. This, of itself, should be enough for people to give kudos and thanks to this amazing body part. It should be enough to spur us to take care of this amazing body part given all the work and how hard it works to manage and regulate functions, feelings physical and emotional, internally and externally, and yet we take it for granted. We largely ignore it until there seems to be something ‘wrong’ with it. Until it is keeping us up at night, until it seems to control our every sleeping and waking moment, running like a wild horse with the bit in its teeth or incessantly chattering like a monkey in overdrive and then we feel hopeless and helpless to the little tyrant inside our skulls.

We get to this point of despair and we think – yes, we think still with that thing that seems to have turned into the enemy – what can I do? Why is one of my best body parts betraying me. It should be obvious but maybe it isn’t at first. The brain needs a break. The brain needs discipline and the brain, as funny as it sounds, needs to know who is the boss of it. It may appear that the brain is the boss of everything but really, there is a higher awareness, a higher consciousness just right above the brain. This consciousness often sits and watches all that is going on. It doesn’t usually say too much, it mainly observes but it is there to give the brain some well deserved R&R, the catch is, you have to ask it to step in and help you out.

Wow, this is great, right? Your brain is running around in circles, it is tired, it is stressed out, it is in over drive, it is a wild and undisciplined horse or monkey, maybe both, AND there is a built in solution. Just ask the ‘overseer’ to cover. Easy! You’ll do it right now, won’t you? So you do.

“Please mighty overseer, help me rest my brain and deal with this stress. Please make the crazy, frenetic thoughts stop whirling around in my head. Please give me a break.”

That ought to do it. You wait. Nothing is happening. You wait. Still nothing. You give it about 10 more seconds because that’s all you can stand really. Then your brain starts screaming again. “Stupid overseer, I knew it wouldn’t work, it’s not really there, it doesn’t really do anything at all. Mother was right if you want anything done you’ve got to do it yourself.” And you’re back on the vicious cycle. The brain is back in its tyrannical role, barking out orders, sizing up situations, taking care of business.

You’re disappointed. You were really looking forward to feeling less stressed. You really thought that it could work. You must have been wrong, the overseer does not exist. What other explanation could there be?

Ask yourself another question. How much of a chance did you give the overseer? Half a minute? You’re brain has been over worked for years and you expected the overseer to fix all of that in 30 seconds? Really??

Try again. Find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed for at least 20 minutes. Make yourself comfortable. Make sure you will be warm – bring a blanket, warm socks or a sweater. Make sure you will feel safe – lock a door if you need to. Get into position, seated or laying down. Ask again.

“Okay, overseer, I need a break, take over!” Now wait, but really wait. Let your mind go blank. A thought will come, push it back where it came from. Wait some more. Another thought will come. Bat it away. Thoughts will keep trying to push themselves to the front of your consciousness – DON’T LET THEM. You may need to be tenacious in your effort to keep the thoughts away. Soon you will notice the overseer suggests that you take a longer breath in and let the breath out slowly. It won’t do it with a recognizable thought. Your lungs will respond. You will notice your heart rate is a little slower, again, that’s the overseer. You will also notice – eventually – that your brain DOES relax and let go. This is where you will find the rest that it needs.

Spend the whole 20 minutes taking the break. Even if the thoughts never completely disappear. Stay with it. As often as a thought comes you send it away. With practice, not putting expectations or goals on the amount of time it takes to “get results”, the thoughts will not try to come any more. You will rest.

To begin, visualize, forming only pictures in your mind, a vast nothingness. Let yourself float there in complete stillness not thinking, not worrying, not talking in your head to yourself, not planning, not scheming. At first it may help to draw pictures in your head. You are floating on a cloud. There is fog all round. Picture the fog, see it in your mind. Your body becomes part of the fog. The fog is everything, contains everything. The fog is nothing and emptiness. Everything and nothing. You are the fog. You are everywhere, everything and everyone. You expand without limit. You melt into nothingness.

At first it will be challenging to push the thoughts away but with practice you will achieve this more easily. If possible, set aside 20 minutes at the same time each week to start. As you practice week by week you may add more sessions. Like any exercise, as a general rule, the more you get the more it benefits you. However also, as with any new activity, the first few attempts can be clumsy and awkward maybe even discouraging. Don’t be discouraged. It doesn’t matter if you don’t ‘ace it’ the first or second or third time you try. You will get another chance the next time and the time after that and the time after that. Be easy on yourself. Give yourself as many chances as it takes. Forgive yourself if it seems to be going ‘wrong.’ Don’t judge it and when you’re done with it, forget it. Nobody is keeping score. Take the Nike slogan to heart and “Just DO it!”

What You Will Need:

- 20 minutes, undisturbed

- A ‘place’ that is comfortable and (what you consider to be) safe and private

- Patience

- Kindness/forgiveness/love

Please email/contact me (seabelle7@gmail.com) if you have any questions regarding quieting the mind. Please visit my website – http://www.yogazoebella.ca – for more information on meditation and yoga.

Thank you. May you find peace and fulfillment.

The History of Ozone Therapy

By

Expert Author Frank McGavin

There are very few people outside of the medical community who have heard of ozone therapy with the exception of those who have had to undergo this process in their treatment. The fact is that this therapy has been around since the nineteenth century and has been employed in many different ways since then. The first time it was utilized was as a method for sterilizing surgical rooms and the equipment that would be used to operate on patients. It was also used to disinfect drinking water to get rid of germs, bacteria and other health issues associated with water treatments.

It was also used to treat tuberculosis as well as some inner ear infections that caused deafness with limited success. The First World War was when ozone therapy made huge leaps because of the ability to kill bacteria and was used to treat wounds that soldiers received during combat. The physicians that opted for this treatment realized that not only did the treatment help keep the wound sterile, but it also helped to keep the wound from swelling and losing oxygen which is needed to for a wound to heal properly.

There is some controversy regarding this type of treatment however as some assert that this therapy is not tested enough nor has it offered genuine medical benefits above being used as a sterilization technique. Some states in the United States have banned the use of them with Florida being the most vocal about the prohibition of its use. When this therapy is used on mammals other than human test subjects, there have been issues with the treatments that make it difficult for some to realize the benefits to humans.

Many other countries allow full use of ozone therapy and have full clinics dedicated to its practice while still requiring them to maintain and use them according to each governing body’s rule. The main issue is that the intravenous use can be dangerous and does hold some side effects. Proponents for the treatments claim that the benefits outweigh the side effects and rely on their own studies to prove out this point.

While controversial, it is common knowledge among those in the industry that ozone therapy can have its benefits. It is a great way to sterilize large areas and equipment for surgical use and can definitely decontaminate water. There is still more study that needs to be done to determine how harmful the therapy is on the human body.

Writing about all things green, Frank turns to write about Hyperbaric Chambers, which are sweeping the health industry by storm.

Teeth Whitening – What You Need to Know About It

By

Expert Author Sally E Dillon

Teeth whitening is one of the most requested services in the beauty sector yet there continues to be an enormous sum of uncertainty with regards to the subject. Teeth whitening is very profitable, and thus very aggressive, marketplace; which is probably why we have such a difficult time sorting through all the information, or misinformation, out there. This article is intended to offer an overview of teeth whitening, how it works, what to watch for when comparing teeth whitening products and services, and help you determine if teeth whitening is for you. Or perhaps, what type of teeth whitening suits you best.

Variety of Gel: There are basically two types of bleaching gels used in the US. Hydrogen peroxide gel and carbamide peroxide teeth whitening gel. Hydrogen peroxide is the active ingredient; i.e. hydrogen peroxide is the actual compound that bleaches your teeth. Carbamide peroxide has to break down into hydrogen peroxide before it can bleach your teeth. 36% carbamide peroxide is roughly equivalent to 12% hydrogen peroxide.

Gel Concentration: The greater the concentration, the faster and more extraordinary your whitening results will be. However, only a dentist should perform bleaching with high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (over 35% H2O2) as these gels can harm the soft tissue in your mouth and only a dentist is qualified to protect your soft tissue properly. Any gel can potentially damage your gums if used improperly so be sure your whitening professional is properly qualified or that you meticulously stick to instructions if you are applying the gel by yourself. Also, the more concentrated the gel, the greater the probability of experiencing tooth sensitivity.

Application: The procedure of applying the teeth whitening gel to your teeth can range from having to paint it on yourself while you’re sitting in the chair to having trays, that will contain the gel, custom fitted to your teeth. If you are having skilled chair-side whitening, be certain to inquire about who applies the gel and how they will apply it. Remember, only a dentist can put anything in your mouth or on your teeth.

Type of Light: There are three types of lights; LED, plasma arc, and halogen. Of the three, halogen is described by third-party research to be the most effective. Nevertheless, excellent results have been reported employing all three sorts of light. Possibly just as significant is how well the light reaches the surfaces of your teeth.

Time: Laser bleaching treatments are generally provided in packages where you get one, two or three applications in the same sitting. Each treatment lasts approximately 15 minutes. So don’t just question how much time it’s going to take, ask how many applications you will receive during your appointment. If you are using one of the home teeth whitening kits, the gel is probably carbamide peroxide gel. Carbamide peroxide gel has to break down into hydrogen peroxide to be able to bleach your teeth. It takes 15-20 minutes just for it to start breaking down. That is why home-whitening takes longer.

Shades Whiter: Your teeth brightening professional will compare your teeth before and after with a teeth bleaching guide. Hopefully he or she uses either the Spectrum or the R-20 teeth bleaching guide because those two brands are arranged from darker to whiter. It really depends on your teeth, but you can count on up to 8 shades lighter for laser bleaching and 2-3 shades for home whitening.

Results: How long your benefits will last is somewhat dependent upon how well you care for your teeth after the bleaching treatment. Your results will last longer if you use a follow-up home bleaching system and keep away from things like smoking or drinking coffee, tea, and wine.

Cost: The price you’ll have to pay for teeth lightening is highly variable. 1-hr laser whitening can run from $49 to $299 or much more, depending on whether or not a dentist performs the treatment and how many treatments you get. Kits can cost from $29 all the way up to $189 or a lot more. Just be sure you’re comparing oranges with oranges. And recall, it is the hydrogen peroxide in the gel that bleaches away the staining on your teeth.

Beaming White is a US manufacturer and provider of quality teeth whitening products, supplies, and services.

Screening For Skin Cancer and The Risks Involved

By

Screening for cancer is often recommended if you have a family history of the disease. It will help in finding the cancer early and also reduce the chances of succumbing to the disease. Doctors even use certain types of screen tests to find cancer in some patients. However, these are primarily restricted to clinical trials that allow doctors to figure out which people have the least risk of getting cancer. But, the biggest benefit of a cancer screening test is to detect the cancer before it begins showing symptoms. When patients receive early treatment for the disease, it improves the chances of recovery and decreases the possibility of dying from the cancer. That is why having a screening test for skin cancer is extremely important. In fact, skin cancer is quite widespread in the United States, with 1 million people diagnosed with it each year.

Screening for skin cancer involves several steps and is not just restricted to a laboratory test. Physically checking the skin can help identify skin cancer early. Doctors recommend that patients check their skin every month for any abnormal changes, which should be brought to their attention immediately. In addition, those people who have had skin cancer previously should have regular skin checks performed by their doctors.

If the doctor finds something abnormal about a particular patch of skin, a biopsy will be performed. A part of the abnormal skin is sent to the laboratory for checking, where the pathologist checks it under the microscope to see whether the skin cells have turned malignant.

Typically, it is possible to detect cancer without having a biopsy done, as skin melanomas tend to grow under the epidermis and never penetrate the dermis. It is possible to cure skin cancer if it has not metastasized to any other part of the body.

However, there are some risks involved when it comes to screening tests for skin cancer. Some of the tests may not be able to detect the cancer. Just because a screening test detects cancer, it does not guarantee that your health will improve or you will live longer. This is especially true if the cancer has reached an advanced stage. Some of the skin cancers do not show any symptoms and may never become life-threatening. However, when these cancers are found through screening tests, they are treated. The treatment for cancer has several undesirable side effects and may not offset the benefits of the treatment. Also, it is possible that the screen test gives a false negative result. At times, the test may show that cancer is not present when it is and this may cause delay in getting the right treatment for the malignancy. Another possibility is that screen test may show a false positive result when there is no cancer present. This causes the person to go through an unwanted biopsy and then suffer from anxiety until it is conclusively diagnosed that the person is not suffering from the cancer.

The Basics Of A Health Exam

By

Much can be learned about a patient’s condition by listening to and observing the patient’s body. A few routine tests can be instrumental in saving someone’s life. It is important to one’s overall health and well-being to adhere to regularly scheduled physical examinations. Here is what you can expect when reporting for a routine physical examination.

To begin with, your doctor will need some general information about you, so you will have to complete a health history form. You will be asked about allergies to medications, past surgeries -if any, and possibly questions about alcohol, tobacco, and drug consumption. It is important to be completely honest with your answers. This information is confidential, and it can be helpful in determining the causes of any conditions that might be present or that might be avoided. Even if you have a regular doctor who knows you well, you may be required to update this form annually. Your or your family’s medical history can change with each year – a parent or a sibling may develop something that might also affect you. Sometimes we can be suddenly stricken with an unexpected health issue or illness. The information on this form can assist doctors in determining if there might be symptoms of impending complications.

After your paperwork is done it is then that you will first meet with a nurse and they will take down some general information about you. They will gather data about your height, weight, and blood pressure and in many cases take urine or even draw blood. These may seem menial, however there is a lot of information that can be learned not only from the blood and urine analysis tests and the blood pressure check but even from the information contained in weight and height. Any significant change in these can provide an indication of a health problem as well.

When your doctor first comes in the room he or she will discuss with you the information that they have gathered so far and ask more probing questions about any health area that they feel may be an issue. Then as they begin the exam, the doctor will not only listen to your systems but they will also look and feel to check if everything seems normal. Most doctors have a patient wear a gown so that they can see the areas that they are checking on because there are skin issues and discoloration issues that can indicate problems.

Overall, a routine health exam can help to identify some serious health issues. When caught early enough many serious health issues can be treated more successfully and many can even be cured.

The Various Criteria That Should Be Looked Out When Choosing A Medical Doctor

By

There are numerous different criteria that one can use to choose a physician for their medical care. Several people merely choose from the list of doctors that are approved by their health insurance firm, as these are the doctors that they are going to have to pay the least to see. For some individuals choosing a doctor takes really little time and they genuinely don’t seem to have quite significantly invested in choosing a wellness care practitioner. They just choose one from the list and if they go and see them and do not find them completely revolting, then that is who they are going to continue to see.

Other people will pick doctors from the well-being insurance company’s approved list but in the end they will go through the tedious process of interviewing every single physician to attempt and choose the physician that best suits them. When choosing a common practitioner, most people are fairly laid back except in cases of an HMO where this doctor is the primary go to for everything. In this case many people will switch several times until they land on that physician they are most comfy with.

When it comes to a specialist, nonetheless, in circumstances exactly where a person is seriously ill the bar is substantially raised as to what level of physician one will accept. A lot of people will interview at great length with numerous distinct opinions a physician which will be performing surgery or one who is going to be in charge of handling a far more serious treatment regimen like that of a cancer patient. It can be imperative then to most patients that they are dealing with a person that they like and trust.

So what criteria do a lot of people use to choose a physician? Well, honestly most would prefer a physician that came recommended but other than that most will select a physician solely on how they really feel about that individual. In the end it’s absolutely nothing more than a gut feeling that makes someone pick a specific physician and even though over time most people will use the doctor’s actions to create a determination on no matter whether to help keep with them or switch doctors several go with their gut and it pans out for them.

In the end you need a doctor that you simply trust and really feel comfortable with specially when you have a more significant wellness problem. Medicinal And Culinary Uses For Corn Silk

By

Corn silk may now be associated with a healthy lifestyle and medicinal benefit, but, as an adolescent, my memories of the use of corn silk was as a cigarette alternative. I have been told tales of those people in the Dirty Thirties who regularly rolled this dried corn fibre into cigarette papers, since tobacco was prohibitively expensive. While I do not recommend this practice today, the anecdote illustrates that desperate people use creative tactics to achieve an end!

The silk from the ears of corn, ironically, has significant medicinal benefit and use, unlike tobacco. It is used to treat cystitis, prostatitis and urethritis, and has a long history in the treatment of bedwetting, kidney stones, jaundice and oedema. Studies have found that it reduces blood clotting time and blood pressure. As a gentle treatment for gout, it rivals the effectiveness of cherries. (As a gout sufferer, I can attest to the effectiveness of both.)

Rick in Vitamin K, it is a good diuretic, eliminating fluids but not decreasing the body’s potassium. Since it contains significant potassium, whatever is lost through the diuretic effect of the corn silk is more than offset but its input levels.

While the most popular method of consuming corn silk is to make a tea or infusion by steeping a handful of fresh or dried silk in two cups of boiled water, there is a wealth of other options for using this valuable grass in recipes.

I dry the silk (preferably in open air, as opposed to a dehydrator), then crumble a small handful over my cereal, similar to sprinkling flax seed over cereals. It has a slightly sweet and nutty taste. In early summer, I harvest the silk fresh, chop it fine, and use it in salads. I have found that the full silk is quite stringy, unless chopped. In soups, I use chopped silk along with cream corn and finely chopped potatoes, parsley, a little tarragon, pepper, chopped onions and cayenne. On occasion, I will toss in chopped zucchini or pumpkin and a little pumpkin spice as an alternative. Dried & crushed corn silk also works well in breading for chicken and pork chops.

Ideally, the material should be harvested just prior to the ears forming, so that the pollen is captured, as well. Because of its high moisture content, do not store in plastic, and dry any silk that you will not be using immediately. To dry corn silk, spread it thinly on a fibreglass screen in an area without direct sunlight, but moderate air movement. In a dehydrator, corn silk tends to clump.

There have been no significant reports of side effects regarding the consumption of corn silk. However, as in all foods and medicines, moderation is recommended.
